Reducing the Risk of Spina Bifada

Daily intake of at least 4 mg of folic acid three months or more before conception and through the first month of pregnancy reduces the incidence of neural tube defects related to folate deficiency by 50-70%. Since there is no way to determine who is at risk of the deficiency, this is a universal recommendation for women of child-bearing potential.
